The American was understandably weary after his exploits in New Zealand and Nishioka took full advantage to win 6-4, 7-6, 4-6, 6-4. The Japanese backed up that good form in his first-round match in Melbourne, which pitted him against recent-Auckland champion Tennys Sandgren. However, he was confronted with the difficult first-round draw of three-time major champion Stan Wawrinka and the Swiss proved too strong, winning 7-6, 6-4. Khachanov made his Australian Open preparations in Doha at the Qatar Open. But whilst Khachanov has reached the last 16 at both Roland Garros and Wimbledon, Nishioka only has one other match win at a major. Both men are making their third consecutive appearance in the second round at Melbourne Park and neither has yet gone beyond this stage at the Australian Open. This will be the first meeting between Khachanov and Nishioka with the Japanese having spent a significant amount of time on the treatment table over the past two seasons due to an ACL tear.
